It really annoys me that they cut out the segment with Richard reaching the secluded, temporarily-abandoned cabin with Matty.
It was such a peaceful, wonderful moment – Richard opening up the unhinged door and discovering a veritable treasure-trove of comfort in the middle of the arctic wilderness – a small kitchen with plenty of unspoiled perishables for use, including a fully-functional stove; a bedroom with a couple of bunks and flimsy mattresses that would have afforded ample comfort in comparison to the tents they were camping in… And all the while, the polar sunset was shining in through the windows on Richard's face like God beckoning him to indulge in these simple pleasures rather than continue on with his campaign to beat Jeremy and James to the pole…
Like I said, it was a truly great scene and it's a shame that the BBC decided to cut it.

During the 1970 Thule incident where a nuclear armed b-52 crashed into remote Greenland. After planning and research by the US and Danish militaries to rescue the surviving crew that had ejected prior to the crash. Dogsledding was determined to be the only way to the remote location. Diesel gels. Fuel freezes. Parts break. These people use dogs even today, not because they can’t afford a diesel pickup with a big tank on the back, but because it’s not possible. as far as cruelty goes… Respect comes from leadership. If they didn’t respect her, they would have bit her like they were each other out of their own lack of respect for each other’s position. Nature is beautiful, even the artificial kind.

TLDR: These are not domestic dogs, and the only way to keep them in line and not hurting or killing each other is by force, as nothing else will stop them. It’s not abuse it’s reenforcing your position as the alpha in a pack of nearly wolves

To the few people who don’t understand why she was whipping the dogs. They are not pets, they are working dogs. This means they aren’t nearly as domesticated as what we’re used to. I work at a pet store which is very vigilant about the health of pets and helping people know how to train without abusing. These types of dogs are the exception because they are wild enough to not be affected by simple scolding, and likely not even shock collars as some working dogs (usually hunting dogs) need to get them back to reality. As bad as it sounds these dogs can only be put back in line by means of force, and needs to be done so by the alpha, and in this case, the human is the alpha. The dogs may be “hurt” but it’s more of a sting to break them up, and not truly hurt them.
