I also think a 2017 Civic Si would be a good alternative. While not direct competition to the Mazda it offers a lot of fun in a superb handling and fun, sporty coupe (or sedan) at an affordable price!

As far as current vehicles are concerned, I would definitely go the 86/BRZ route. If the emailer can wait a bit, Honda may release a baby NSX which would be a spiritual successor to the S2000 possibly within the next year or two.

The guy was asking for a convertible, so the brz is out. First gen Z4 would be my pick. 3.0si with 265ps. Much lighter than the last Z4. Really fun car.

Great list! Literally did this shopping last weekend and ended up with an 03 S2000!

I cross shopped the Miata, BRZ, and the S2000. I am not a fan of the 124 personally and the maintenance costs were a bit higher when it came to the 986 S.

2003 was the first year of the 986.1 Boxster upgrades inclusive of glass rear window and glove box.

I'm rather shocked that Cooley did not bring up the Z3/Z4 models. In terms of size and feel the z3 would be a great alternative. If more power and refinement are what's wanted then a Z4M can be had for the mid to low 20k. It's like an S2k that put on a suit and has been working out a lot.

Polaris Slingshot, $20K. You will pay pennies for insurance but you will need a garage.

Of this list Id definitely pick the S2000. I have driven an S2000 and Miatas, and theres still nothing like the nimbleness of a Miata that the S2000 lacked.

I really like my 2013 Merc C350 coupe 4matic. I picked up last year with 34k miles for around $24k. I think it meets the criteria of quicker than a Miata and not ginormous like a Mustang. And it has a pano sunroof

Liked the video and ideas but just looking and the price shows why there's no real alternative to the Miata; its hands down the cheapest, most fun and reliable little "sports" spyder car there is. It's unique 🙂 I drive one and I absolutely love and would get all of these cars(except the Fiat, I'm italian but I don't like the look, and I'd keep the Porsche last) but the Miata is on its own league. A cheaper, less powerful one but that's exactly what most people can afford 🙂

    Subaru BRZ…

I think a 370z is a cheap and good candidate, also small porches like the new cayman and boxter will work.

Honda Civic Si or Honda Civic Sport Touring? I prefer the hatchback, but I was surprised to find that the Sport Touring model is more expensive than the Si! With the Si, you can only get a sedan or a stylish (but less practical) coupe, but it must have much sportier parts and underpinnings, right?

Neither of the Subaru's are convertibles! That is probably the biggest attraction about the MX-5. The others are nice substitutes. I've had both the NB and NC1 Miatas but wanted a little more room and luxury, but still being a soft top, so I now have a 4g Mitsubishi Eclipse and LOVE it! Plus, the roof is power! Just an added bonus to the room and luxury.
