What is Midgrade Gas? Cooley explains Splash Blending

Most refiners don’t really make midgrade gas. They make regular and premium and that’s what’s stocked underground at the gas station. When you squeeze the midgrade handle you get a cocktail of the two fuels, “splash blended” as you pump. Cooley explains it all here:

    y doesnt cooley reviews cars. this email thing is ok…but need him to REVIEW cars more!!!!

    so if the car requires premium i guess one could fill up midgrade huh? i mean its what 89 versus 91 for premium . so a difference of 2 should not make any difference nor harm the engine huh

    What…my dad owns a gas station and I did not know that they just mix the two, but I can confirm this after asking my dad. Even though it makes sense, my mind was blow for a sec.

    Remember Hancock Gasoline (west coast) or Sunoco (East, Central)? They had a blend knob on the side of the pump that you selected one of 5 – 7 blends (rotgut-Super-duper)

    Oh I am happy Roadshow/Cooley did a follow up video, me and a few others had a pretty big discussion about that point on mid-grade.
    That said I disagree with Cooley regarding MPG Gains and how important they are (To a consumer) 3-4% improvement is only about 1-2MPG for most people.

    A 3-4% increase for a Manufacture is a massive improvement however as they are constantly given rebates/tax breaks and or other incentives per every MPG of improvement
    they manage.

    Hope to see more follow up videos out of you guys.

    You say we'll need to keep regular and mid grade around a while because the fleet doesn't turn over that quickly, except that current and older cars would not be harmed by running premium. You've done videos on how it's not worth the money because you get no benefit, but if they can make a single grade of gas, and the states can combine their regional specific blend requirements so there are fewer of those, it does make sense that the price should fall. Right now, premium doesn't cost any more to make, it's only more expensive because there's less demand for it.

    Get a 12 pack of octane booster if you need to run premium. Usually around $20'ish to $30'ish. From 87 to 91 its a .30 cent difference. Was .20 cents for a long time. 16 gallons x .30 = $4.80 you can buy a 12pk of 12oz. Octane Booster for much less.

    OR once the range is decent enough on a proper Pure EV's you can collect & store your own energy.

    What cars require mid-grade? It's either 87 or 91/92/93 depending on location for premium. They are going to face a lot of push-back on trying to phase out 87.

    Hmm, never knew manually adding regular and premium was called Splash Blending. Learn something new every day.

    I more or less do this. I'll fill with Regular, then top up with Premium. I drive roughly the same distances each week, so it's easy to keep my filling schedule pretty consistent.

    Mid grade is stupid – either you own a BMW or Mercedes that requires 91 Premium or a Toyota or Chevrolet that runs perfectly well on 87 regular.

    Our sams Club doesn’t blend because they only have two options premium and regular.

    Or simply drive on LPG.

    Costs 2 times less than gasolene, has 104 octance rating to start and does not polute at all once burned

    I love people who drive miles to save a few cents per gallon of gas. It does not add up. If you pump 20 gallons at .10 per gallon higher price it is only $2.00 more. Drive miles to save $2.00? How much gas did you burn getting there? How much more wear and tear on your car? What is your time worth? It doesn't make "cents"

    My car requires Premium.  I'll continue to fill her up with Premium.  Giving it anything lower grader is a slap in the face to the car that's been treating me so well.  Saving $0.20/gal?  Nah I'm not that desperate.  Premium all the way.

    What’s up with stations selling 93 octane instead of 91?
    Maybe the pumps mix at the same rate giving you a 90 octane – close enough to 91 for me!

    I've come across stations that have 4 or 5 gas grades before (not an E85 station). The pump just blends from the 2 tanks accordingly. One got taken over by a discount brand a few years back and all 4 buttons on the pump just say 87 now. They've had buttons break on pretty much every pump now, but hey, there's 3 other working ones, so they don't even bother fixing them.

    The automakers want 94 octane. Why not compromise on 93, which is sold in most states, already? The only exceptions are Colorado and California.

    I've heard that putting a higher octane fuel in a car that only needs regular does neither harm nor help engine performance, mpg, wear, etc, so couldn't they just make one premium blend instead of having to keep regular around for 20+ years? It would obviously still be more expensive for the consumer to only be able to buy premium, even with the savings the gas companies get with reducing blend count, but I don't see the reason in having to keep regular around if they went through with the higher octane standard.

    Actually it's not a 50/50 blend of regular and premium to get Madrid cuz at sea level regular octane is 87 and premium octane is 93 and a 50/50 blend would get you 90 or 91 octane if it was a true 50/50 blend the difference in regular vs. Premium is a 6 octane Point difference where is regular versus mid-grade is only 8 to Octane difference so it's really more like about 33% premium to 67% regular to get mid-grade.

    If consumers want the ease of only one grade of gas, they will buy cars that use that one grade of gas. There is no need for the automakers' lobbyists to use the government to force it upon us.

    Mid grade never made sense to me. Only 87 93 make sense. California can slide off in to the ocean with their purposely neutered 91.

    The government would like everyone on premium because they get an equal percentage tax cut of either fuel, and premium being 24% higher means a 24% tax increase, and government always wants more of your money (its what pays their salaries and gives them power after all). There's also huge money in the corn industry with monsanto lobby and the like, and they like producing ethanol, and increasing ethanol content in fuel is also a way to increase octane rating, which would be another thing they could push (even though it reduces fuel economy, reduces vehicle life, and reduces fuel storage life significantly).

    The only problem is is even a low octane car can run off premium so you could switch immediately to all premium
