You may think the back seat of a car is a safe cocoon, away from the windshield and dashboard, but that was decades ago. Today, the back seat is a relative backwater when it comes to safety tech — and you might want to think twice before sitting back there.

Kids in rear car seats are a different matter. Car seats are designed to mitigate some of the risks in the back and are typically safer than a kid facing a front airbag that deploys with far too much force to protect them.

Informative video. So many fatalities are from those in the backseat. It’s especially true for children. We need collision avoidance on all cars.

Before we go throwing Airbags into the front seat backs, we need a way to disable them for rear facing child seats. Or to be educated how to or how it is automatically disabled in those cases. We also need a full standard of how child seats are installed, not a hodge podge of different methods. Unfortunately, in-seat weight sensors aren't going to be the solution for this. Another problem we're going to run into is keeping rear passengers restrained in a position for these implementations to be effective. We still have issues of front passengers riding with their feet on the dash, let alone with kids in front facing seats with their feet on the seat in front, or the 200 pound full grown man in the back who never wears a seatbelt.

I'm glad someone brought it up. Safety is just a catch phrase with auto manufacturers. The moment someone dies they try to pass the blame on to everyone but themselves.

Wow! My MOM’S brand new Audi 5000 years ago. In the late 80s was rear ended on the freeway. My dad was driving and the seat broke and he was slammed into the rear or backseat area of the car. Thank goodness my sister was sitting behind the passenger side. Car was totaled though and there was no injuries?? Funny because the front seats in the car felt wonderful to sit in?? Her next car though was Acura’s top of the line…the famous and ridiculously reliable Legend. She has never left Acura since!
