The Pontiac Solstice Was a Better Miata from General Motors

The Pontiac Solstice was a Mazda Miata from General Motors — except I think it was better. Today I’m reviewing the Solstice GXP to explain what was and what I think about it, and I’m going to take you on a tour of the Solstice. I’m also going to drive the Solstice GXP and show you what the Pontiac Solstice was like on the road.

This car is just one of many sad examples of what went wrong with the American car industry.

It's not a GM Miata, it's a US available Opel GT. GM owned Opel and produced this for the US that's the only reason we were blessed with the KAPPA

So you have to get out of the car, open the 'trunk', undo three clips etc etc etc to get the roof on and off? Sorry, no.

Of course, the very best General Motors sports car is the Vauxhall VX220.

My wife had a GXP. One big quark that Doug failed to pick up on was the battery was located on the passenger side tucked down low. Great for the CG but required removing the lower quarter panel behind the front tire to change the battery. Additionally, the car had no spare tire but did come with a can of fix-a-flat and a battery operated air pump. A fun car overall. We hated to part with it.

If I had an unlimited budget for an unnecessary car, I'd get the Saturn Sky version of this and (somehow) convert it to a coupe (only the solstice came as a coupe). Then I'd get a better transmission and mount it in the rear, like a corvette. I'd either build the turbo 2.0 or swap in a newer 2.7 turbo 4-banger. I know what you're thinking, "Just swap in an entire corvette drivetrain, or better yet, just buy a corvette." And to that I reply "Go jump in a lake. I'll waste my money however I want."

Small correction.. there’s one more way to distinguish the gxp on the exterior: the front grille. There’s a tiny extra little grille way on the bottom and also there are extra vents by each of the blinkers which deliver air to the brakes.

I like the looks of the Sky over the Solstice. Would have loved to see a turbo version of the Fiero's 2.8L V6 in it. I had a 86, and loved the exhaust note.

this car was originally released in the UK as a Vauxhall VX Lightning

I could never stand the look of the Solstice. The waste line is too high. It looks frumpy.

  • Build quality was super terrible, which is unfortunate. GM sorta gave up on this, but I think they could have built a better car and bought a priceless amount of political capital/customer loyalty.

I bought an '06 Solstice in '08, with 15k miles on it. It had some problems due to GM bean counters doing their best to kill their customers and their own company, but I straightened 'em out.

Between me, my daughter and son, we've put 170k miles on it, driving throughout the southeast US. My son still drives it, and has the top down every moment he can. We all love it.

The Solstice was and remains the best "driver" I've ever encountered, quirks and all.

2008 Corvette steering wheel so it can't be all that bad! I saw better inner door panels on trucks in the 60's.

Forget about it…..Get a Honda S2000… blows away both the Miata and the Solstice….and it's value goes up….not down!!

I had this car in navy blue. I had the automatic GXP. Fun car, great gas mileage. I loved it CA where there wasn't much rain. When we moved to TN the roads were fun, the rain was not. So I sold it.

It's a rebadged Opel. Saturn and Vauxhall also had rebadged versions….Doug is an idiot, he could do just a little research and find this out.

You couldn't take 10 minutes and clean up that area on the trunk/roof lid, yellow panel on the interior and gauges? Wow. Could do so much better to present such a cool car.
