New Land Rover Defender meets Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G-Class off-road | Autocar

Presented by: Matt Prior
Shot & edited by: Oli Kosbab

Here it is, then, the new Land Rover Defender against its rivals for the first time.

They include the Jeep Wrangler, the original 4×4. Since 1941, the Jeep has been setting the standard off-road.

Then there’s the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. It is new too – although it doesn’t look it – and with three locking differentials and superb off-road performance, it’s no walkover.

We take an in-depth look at all three as we judge their respective off-road performance. Approach angles, ramp angles, departure angles, potential differential locking, wade depth, axle articulation: it’s all under the spotlight here.

Jeep and Mercedes show how to curate an icon. Land Rover show how to destroy it.

I think car reviews should start stating prices. That's a very important consideration. A more expensive car better measure up (no pun intended).

Great video… Was the sway bar disconnected on the Jeep? It doesn't seem like it.

  • In Australia they say if you want to go to the outback take a land rover BUT if want to get home as well take a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Wow. Big disagreement. The new Defender is a big disappointment in all respects. Not the least of which is what kind of mechanical engineer would add air suspension to a rugged 4×4? that is malpractice from the English engineers. Oops, my bad I forgot that Tata owns LR that explains a lot, the Indian engineers are good when they can copy and paste from others. Not even the G Class made the same mistake. Here is the point. For years since the early 1990s Mercedes made the stupid mistake in selling all their S Class sedans and some E class sedans with air suspension. When the car is new, the car rides like a dream. The problem? you spend $140,000 dollars on a new S Class and less than a year later the chassis one morning is all the way kissing the ground. You get it towed to the dealer and they said it will only cost you $15000 to bring it to as good as new condition. Many pissed off Mercedes owners. So what the geniuses as Land Rover do? they added air suspension to a 4×4? is this a joke? All Land Rover geniuses at Tata Motors had to do is take the 3.5 L or 4.2 L Diesel V8 engine, copy the old Defender design, cut manufacturing costs and that iconic best of class Defender would be selling like hot pankcakes in a Sundar morning breakfast joint if the price is south of $50,000 dollars. This Defender would outsell, out perform and outclass anything else in the market due to its engine insane torque. But what did Land Rover do to it's best of class Defender? they stopped selling it. You can tell I am a fan of the Diesel V8 Defenders and I know from first hand experience. So Land Rover if you can't commit to build an excellent product, don't use the Defender name anymore. Keep producing the LR Disco "Discothere" or the LR Evoque that only evoques memories of toy wannabe 4x4s

So to summarise then, the Defender is pretty close off-road to the other two, but light years ahead in terms of on-road ability, safety, technology, refinement, speed, braking etc….

Where the Defender shines though, is on a sandy track with a high middlemannetjie (the high part in the centre of a sand track) Reason being, is because it is down the centre that it has its best ground clearance, where most others have their worst because of their diff pumpkins hanging down.

Sir did you disconnect the Jeeps front sway bar. That is an option in the Jeep and you did not mention it.

As an off road rig the Jeep makes the most sense. It’s the cheapest by far and arguably the most capable. The others seem to be more for people who fantasize about driving off road.

So…was that a choice or a mistake that you didn’t lock the axles or disconnect the sway bars on the Rubicon?

What happen to the days of you see a hill and you just floor it all the way up now this guy who had never been truly off-road in his life never been in the situation where your squeezing between trees while trying to make it through mud or having a car with a gimmick such as air suspension put a solid axle in the front and rear 33 inch tires and just eat
