The strength of the regen baking at higher speed will be directly proportion to the power of the motor. Why? It's simply the same motor working as a generator, and if it's capable of putting out, say, 160 hp when driving the vehicle rather than, say, 80 hp then, when it works in reverse as a generator, all other things being equal, for former will be able to "absorb" twice as much kinetic energy and convert it to electrical energy in the same time. As kinetic energy goes to the square of speed, then at high speed, there's a lot more energy to absorb.

So, at 70 mph (31 metres per second), if a motor is capable of absorbing 100 kW, then one second's worth of braking will absorb 100 kJ of energy, and will slow a 1,500 kg vehicle by about 2.3 m/s, or about 0.23g). However, if it can absorb 50 kW, then that would only be about 1.1 m/s or about 0.11g).

As lower speeds, the kinetic energy is a lot lower due to that square relationship. At 20 mph, the 50 kW version would be capable of slowing the vehicle at more than 0.5g over a 1 second interval using regen (in principle), which is approaching emergency stop rates, and will be deliberately limited below that (as will the 100 kW car). So, that difference disappears at lower speed.

It's considerably more complex than that as issues such as wind and rolling resistance play a role, along with the vehicle electronics and the power/angular speed relationship of the motor. However, the basics apply. In principle, with two EVs of equal mass, the one that can accelerate faster will also have more regenerative braking capability and that will be most obvious at higher speeds assuming, that is, all other aspects are comparable.

I reckon the Zoe ZE40 I used to have would have stood a chance of coming second. It couldn't rapid charge though so on a long trip the Vauxhall and Peugeot may be faster because they have a fast max charge rate compared to the other cars.

I just don't get it with that Honda. They make such a desirable looking car and then cripple the thing with a small battery. I wouldn't be surprised if the battery is responsible for the added weight, due no doubt because Honda are so late to the party.

Nothing like a bit of national racism at the end to complete the trip up north. I'd be carful though using multiple extension leads .. you wouldn't want to brexit it.

Interesting that the MINI did more miles than claimed. BMW claims the BMW iX has a range of 600 km or 375 miles or so which is a lot. Wondering if BMW made jump in battery performance over its rivals.

The thing is if a car goes off the motorway sooner it will then drive slower than the one that stayed on the motorway. So the range won't be the same, not 100% comparable.

So tired of range tests. Why don’t car journalists do the same with ICE cars? Would love to see a Ford Mustang V8 with its tiny petrol tank grind to a halt before an EV. 😂
