BMW’s finally brought the M550i to the UK, so of course, we had to get it in for a review!

We’re sure it’ll come as no surprise to any of you that the M550i doesn’t come cheap though (at least, compared to the regular 5 Series), with the price kicking off from around £70,000! That’s over £30,000 more than the starting price for an entry-level 5 Series.

So is it worth it? Well, if you choose to pay the larger price tag, you’ll be graced with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, which will put down an impressive 530hp and 750Nm of torque! Not only that, but it’ll shoot you to 60mph in just 3.8 seconds.

So, it sounds mighty impressive, right? Which leaves us with just one question – with such strong performance stats, should you bother spending the extra £30,000 and go for the BMW M5? There’s only one way to find out… Keep watching to see what Mat thinks!

    Hi Mat here: do you think there is no need to buy an M5 as this M550i gets so close yet is much less expensive? Or would you always rather just pay the extra for the proper M car?

    I like exterior look of that vehicle much better than the other two German cars. I don't know that I would classify it as a large vehicle. It's larger than the 3 series but that doesn't say much. Your driver's seat looks to be really close to the dash. With that being said the rear seat knee/leg room still looks snug. If you were to push that seat back a few inches that rear seat passenger is now pinned. I know the vehicle is sized this way so that the driving dynamics hold up to the BMW standard but to me it's not a 4 seater. It's more like a 2 and a possible seater. The exhaust sounds really good. If my primary mission is bashing this would be the way to go. If I want a luxury cruiser I'd opt for the A6 instead. It has a more compliant ride and it's more comfortable for 4-5 people.

    See bmw you can do it, it is possible to design a new car without slapping a massive grille on the front. Also I haven’t seen a single review where they say it looks bad. But with the 4 series it’s all they talk about, what does that show you, we don’t want those ridiculously huge grilles

    I don't get where people come up with this tripe.
    The M5 was built to be something specific. The M550i does not exceed or meet those specifications.
    If the M5 has a brief to do 0-60 in 5 and the M550i does it in 4 then yes, it's better.

    But to say it's better when it's not actually meant to be an M car is just BS.

    8:42 – Why do the luxury car brands like BMW, Audi and Mercedes always feel the need to charge buyers extra for things that might be standard on less expensive cars, like simple things like these set release levers in the boot and adaptive cruise control, both of which you’d expect to be standard on a car costing this much, but apparently not! Even a Toyota Corolla has the adaptive cruise control as standard, like Mat said in the video!

    Why is the economy problem? i dont think there is anyone who is buying 4.4 V8 and want economy from the car. Not to mention that this 23 mpg (around 10l / 100km) is briliant for car like this
